TAC Visits Cern And Ferrari Factory

Grade 9, 10 and 11 (27 April-01 May 2016)

A group of 21 Tarsus American College students from grades 9, 10 and 11 and their science teachers Orhan Vatansever and Handan Şahin Duran organized a second visit to CERN and FERRARI factory between April 27 – May 1, 2016.

In this science field trip to Italy and Switzerland, our students had the chance to visit the Ferrari factory as well as the Ferrari museum which showcased the oldest and the newest models of the luxury automobile company. They had a lot of fun doing the test runs of Ferrari cars. In Milan, a major commercial center in the world, visited the Sforza Castle and the Milan Cathedral.

The major science emphasis of the trip was visiting the laboratories of the CERN nuclear research center, to see first hand the experiment assemblies designed by the use of advanced technology. They listened to the presentation about the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments and the steps of the CMS experiment, examining the simulation. They were at the control room where they monitored the experiments. Going 120 meter below ground, they saw the massive and amazing technological tools on site, which almost all of us only saw from the photos. The students expressed their great excitement to travel to the place where the “experiment of the century” took place and improve their wealth of knowledge.

The trip to Switzerland also included cultural and historical landmarks of Geneva such as the United Nations building, Lake Leman, Jet d’Eau Fountain, Mont Blanc bridge and Geneva Cathedral, Nestle-Cailler chocolate factory and Gruyeres, home of the well-known cheese, and the Ceneva Natural History Museum. Their destinations also included the hotel where the Lozan Treaty - an important cornerstone in Turkish History - was signed. In Montreaux, they toured the Freddie Mercury Museum.
