Bookmobile To Kaleburcu Village
Grade 9 Classes (May 7, 2016)
The Light in Mehmet’s Eyes!
Tarsus American College, which sees the importance in Nobel laureate Saul Bellow’s words “People can lose their lives in libraries. We should warn them” continues to take its community service endeavors to the rural areas of Çukurova region. In this framework, the visit of TAC students to Kaleburcu village school, with headmaster Andrew Leathwood and Turkish literature teacher Önder Şit, was quite rewarding. TAC students taught English to the young students for over an hour with concentration on colors, numbers and objects. Their lesson continued with the drama activity and the host students had a great deal of fun conveying concepts through the use of drama. At the end of the lesson, the group headed for the garden to return the books to the bookmobile and to pick new ones. We believe that these fun activities which instill the love for reading contribute to the development of students to a great extent. The light in the eyes of Mehmet, who otherwise preferred to stay silent, was worth seeing as he was involved in drama and in reading activities!
