TAC Visit to the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Information Center

On May 17, 2016,  the 11 IB FM students visited the Akkuyu Nuclear PowerPlant Information Center in Mersin with their ESS and Biology teacher Dr. Duygu Gülev and Chemistry teacher Handan Şahin Duran. The enhancement of technical explanations via interactive presentations made the learning experience especially memorable for the students.

The visit started with the introduction of the parts of the power plant on models, emphasized the amount of power generated, as well as the safe and environmentally-friendly nature of this type of power. With a video presentation at the end of the tour, the officials shared detailed information about the facility to be opened in Akkuyu, Mersin. At this point, representatives provided explanations about the benefits of the plant to Turkey with references to the history of energy in Turkey. Following the presentation, students raised environmental concerns about the potential harm to natural life in the region. The responses to these questions were followed by a short presentation about the future of energy in Turkey and the nuclear power plants across the world. This visit, which helped clear questions in students’ minds about nuclear power plants, contributed greatly to the Chemistry and ESS curricula.
