Visit to Tarsus Senior Citizens Home
Whether an individual incorporates national and universal values is based on their acquisition and internalization of learning about values in their education. To this end, the individual must be cognitively aware of the positive effects of moral values on one’s own life and on the lives of those in the community. In order to raise this awareness, the Science Department teachers, İpek Olsun and Duygu Şimşek, led our students, Doğa İplik, Melisa Aykurt, Güneş Doğan, Ferit Sezen, Doğa Doğan, Mustafa Toslak, Başak Erdoğan, Görkem Hamurcu, Arda Utaş, Boran Erdoğan, Süleyman Şah, and Doruk Koncagül, on a visit to the Tarsus Senior Citizens Home on Saturday December 9th.
This visit aimed to develop respect and tolerance in students towards elders, starting from their own families and expanding the respect to the community.
The visit started in the cafeteria section of the nursing home. During the conversations, accompanied by small refreshments, the students asked the seniors how they were feeling and conversed warmly with them about their life in the seniors’ home. When they asked the seniors questions about their life experiences, the students laughed sometimes, but sometimes, felt sad by their answers.
After these meaningful conversations, the TAC group moved to the floor which houses the mentally handicapped patients. They observed the conditions in which the handicapped seniors lived and found out how they spent their time there. They also visited a handicraft exhibit that displayed items produced by these residents in their free time.
Thanks to this activity, our students are better aware of the importance of spiritual pursuits in life that go beyond material pursuits. At the end of the event, both sides expressed their pleasure and made a promise to meet again in the future.
