TAC Visits Nuclear Power Plant Information Center
The goal of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is to contribute to a better and more peaceful world by raising awareness of global issues in students to build the social skills and a sense of responsibility needed to protect our planet.
In line with this goal, the Science Department organized a visit to the Nuclear Power Plant Information Center in Mersin, on Tuesday, May 25th, for TAC’s grade 11 IB students in order to raise awareness and receive more detailed information about this most controversial topic. The teacher supervisors on this visit were Ms. İpek Olsun and Mr. Mark Pfeiffer.
The authorities at the Information Center provided our students with some explanations about Nuclear Energy and Safety, referencing examples to illustrate the concept of nuclear energy along with its advantages as well as examples of nuclear power plants around the world and famous nuclear physicists. In addition, the principle of electricity generation was explained through various experiential activities.
Finally, after watching the presentation on "waste safety", students expressed their doubts about nuclear energy to the authorities.
This visit helped our students filter their knowledge collected by conducting research on issues of national and international concern using their reasoning and conscience, and it improved their interpretive skills.
